Speed Up PC Boot Time
Disable Applications from Starting at Boot Up
When you install some programs they will insert themselves into an area of your registry that will cause them to load when your computer starts up. Obviously this will use memory and slow down your system. 1.START-->RUN-->type Regedit and click OK. 2.Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Run 3.Once there, locate the entrys on the right; you can identify the program by the path to the executable. Find programs that you can live without starting up from the list. 4.Right click on them and select Delete 5.You may also want to navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Runonce and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Run. 6.Delete any unnecessary programs. 7.Also go to START-->PROGRAMS-->STARTUP and see if there is anything there you wish to remove. 8.Reboot your computer.
Alternative method:
1.Click on the start button and select run. 2.In the text box type msconfig and click ok. 3.Once the window has loaded, click on the startup tab and uncheck programs you do not want to start up anymore.
Disable Windows XP Splash Logo
It is possible to disable XP splash screen, which will slightly speed up the overall boot process. Be aware that removing the splash screen will also cause you not to see any boot-up messages that might come up (chkdsk, convert ... ), but if your system runs without any problems then it should not matter.
1.START-->RUN-->type msconfig and click OK. 2.Select the BOOT.INI tab 3.Checkmark /NOGUIBOOT 4.Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone.; it can be re-enabled by removing the chechmark.

Fine Tune System Memory
These setting changes will fine tune your system's memory management.
NOTE: This tweak may cause problems with ATI cards; double-check if you have an ATI video card installed and run at your own risk! NOTE: At least 512MB of installed RAM recommended before these fixes are attempted![/b]
Go to START-->RUN-->type regedit and then to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
1.DisablePagingExecutive -double click it and in the decimal put a 1 (this allows XP to keep data in memory now instead of paging sections of ram to harddrive yields faster performance!)
2.LargeSystemCache- double click it and change the decimal to 1 (this allows XP Kernel to Run in memory improves system performance alot!)
3.Reboot and watch for improvements.

There are more, but the more an unskilled person messes with their registry, the greater the chance of bricking their PC.

Anti-Virus/Malware DetectionFor obvious reasons, I can't give information on Enterprise versions, but I can recommend some freeware versions available and their strong points: Malwarebytes Anti-MalwareMalwarebytes' Anti-Malware is considered to be the next step in the detection and removal of malware. The product compiles a number of new technologies that are designed to quickly detect, destroy, and prevent malware. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can detect and remove malware that even the most well known anti-virus and anti-malware applications fail to detect. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware monitors every process and stops malicious processes before they start. Operating systems: Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/7SUPERAntispywareDetects and Removes Spyware, Adware, Spyware, Adware, Malware, Trojans, Dialers, Worms, KeyLoggers, HiJackers, Parasites, Rootkits and many other types of threats. Will also repair broken Internet Connections, Desktops, Registry Editing and more with their Repair System. The program is light on System Resources and won't slow down your computer like many other anti-spyware products. Won't conflict with your existing anti-spyware or anti-virus solution. Operating systems: Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/7 Microsoft MSRT (Malicious Software Removal Tool)I know, I know; Microsoft. But actualy, this is a much improved product over series past. This tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software and helps to remove the infection when it's found. Microsoft releases an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month. A 64-bit version is also available from the Microsoft website. Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, or Windows 2000ThreatfireTraditional antivirus solutions cannot protect you until after they have discovered a new threat and produced a signature to counter it. ThreatFire does not rely on signatures, but instead provides behavior-based protection. It is designed to be used alongside your existing antivirus software and it fills the gap in protection between your antivirus signature updates. ThreatFire protects you against major security threats including viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits and even some spyware. Its advanced ActiveDefense technology intelligently analyzes the behavior of processes and programs on a system and immediately halts any malicious action. It continuously monitors all activities on your PC at a very low system level and uses a proprietary combination of analytics, risk algorithms, program histories and tolerance thresholds to identify and shut down threats so you are always protected, no matter how new the threat. ThreatFire is easy to use, instantly effective, and very light on system resources. Operating systems: Windows XP/2003/Vista/Server 2008/7Keep in mind, each of these can be run in parallel (in otherwords, all together) if you have a deeply rooted infection. These will also work in conjunction with your current AV (Antivirus) software without interfering with functionality. Be cautious of products "promising" miracle fixes; stick to what you know. Remember, these are NOT for 'real time' protection! This means the applications listed above are not constantly running and checking for infections. These are to be run as a one time scan. Although updates can, and should, be done to update the definition libraries, you must manually run a scan each time. Check each software manufacturer's website for details on how to use each one and maximize threat detection! NOTE: You can download each of these from the following website: download.cnet.com/windows/Happy Malware hunting!

You should add Microsoft Essentials, it's a brilliant anti-virus program, it does not have a firewall though but Windows XP/7 firewall will be enough.

Microsoft Essentials is a free download and can be installed/used with Windows XP (SP2 minimum), Windows Vista, and Windows 7. You can download it from here: www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspxOne warning, however. This program has been compromised by several FakeAlert Trojans which mimic this application. I'm not a fan of this program, but you can download and judge for yourself. Just make sure this is compatible with your current Antivirus software. However, in case you want to run a scan against Microsoft system files, you can run Microsoft's MSRT (Malicious Software Removal Tool). This program is built into the Windows OS and is updated monthly via the Microsoft Updates. To run MSRT, simply open a Run prompt (START --> Run) and the type mrt.exe[/color].
