If you have an HP desktop or laptop cpu, and are prompted to install updates via HP Update Center, then I recommend backing up EVERYTHING on your computer before doing so. Upon restarting after the update the cpu will update the BIOS files and doing so will lock you out of your own files, forcing you to manually find every bit of information you had left, and then restoring the computer to FACTORY settings, which suuuuucks.
Sorry, but I just went through this, been on the phone with HP support for like 3 hours, and I just had to warn you guys if any of you have an HP. They said the updates have been doing this to a lot of people this past week and the only way to fix the problem is to wipe everything clean and back to factory settings. I had to do this and in the process lost a good 3GB of music and files.
:/
edit: ughhh gotta reinstall UO, xfire, vent, steam

wow fox that really sucks man. Losing music you love and the work you have to do to reinstall everything and man must be a pain to put everything just the way you had it. I'm sure you can do it but it's about time that you have to invest to get everything back to normal. So to prevent this best way is not to do updates or to back up files?

Ignore the update for a few months and/or update your files before doing it. If you have an HP cpu that is....
